Superior Students

Many DJCC students were awarded Superior blue ribbons on projects this weekend, indicating that they will advance to the final level of competition, the State SkillsUSA project judging. Students whose projects were awarded this honor were: Conner Tozier from Hebron HS, who also won Best of Show for the Ad Design competition, Nick Hummert from Hebron HS, who also won Best of Show in Illustration, and the following entrants - David Venable - Marcus HS, Chelsea Sherwood - Marcus HS, Amber Jackson - Marcus HS, Wyatte Schmollinger - Hebron HS, Brandon Donner - Marcus HS, Ariel Coday - Hebron HS, Mallory Strong - The Colony HS, Spencer Hall - Marcus HS, Ryan Brownhill - Marcus HS, Zachary Nienhuser - Marcus HS, Hunter Haygood - Hebron HS, and Charlotte Kimball - Marcus HS. Barely missing the cut and receiving an "Excellent" ribbon were Amy Hillberry - Marcus HS and Cody Phifer - Flower Mound HS. Justin Jones from Flower Mound HS was given a "Good" ranking. There were between 50 and 60 total projects judged in Waco this weekend, and I felt we made a very good showing. We had more accepted to State than any other single school this year and that is a good accomplishment.

We have a lot of people in our department who are waiting to hear about scholarship offers from top design schools and colleges. I am hopeful that we will have good news to report on that score soon too. It is always exciting to see what kinds of things are in store for our seniors.

In almost every Twitter update that I receive, I am finding more and more great examples of creative advertising. This one was in a Tweet I got over the weekend, and I couldn't resist re-posting it. I love the idea of taking an everyday object like a bench and making it communicate something. What better to communicate than CHOCOLATE! I love that the boards are reminiscent of the long thin pieces of a KitKat bar. That is why this works. Attention to detail...

It is a beautiful Saturday and I intend to get out later and run a few errands before I run out of time in the weekend. I had intended to go to Waco today for the awards ceremony for SkillsUSA, but since our Ad Design winner was unable to attend, I didn't go back after the long trip yesterday. My dear husband is handling that duty since he had the first and third place teams in animation this year. I wonder if there is a trip to Nationals in store again for the animators at DJCC? Keep your fingers crossed, it would be great if they were there two years in a row!

Speaking of animators... Mr. Harman is hoping to get some creative input from some of our advanced students - namely Spencer and Cody, and perhaps one or two more. He may be calling in a team to confer about concepts for the group animation that their advanced class is about to start working on. He and I both like the idea of doing some crossover work between the classes, and that may start as early as this week.

Get out those thinking caps, people.
