Oh don't worry people, Crystal Bowersox will be around.

Well, I like American Idol. I've watched it religiously since Kelly Clarkson (of Burleson, Texas!) won it the first season. I liked it even during the Ruben Studdard and Fantasia years that followed. I would not buy a record by either of them, haven't bought an album by Kelly Clarkson since her first one, and frankly - I usually don't listen to any of the American Idols too often after they win. I think the spirit of competition that drives the show is what really appeals to me. I just can't stop watching even if I don't like the singers too much when they make commercial pop records after the show ends.
I think that there was a singer this season that I will actually be buying a record from, and one whose career I think might have some appeal and some staying power. (Some would say that Carrie Underwood is another, and I would probably have to agree. Not so much on any of the other winners of the past.) The singer I liked so much this season was Crystal Bowersox. She was just about impeccable. She isn't glamourous looking or flashy, but she is uber-talented. She has been that way consistently since she was first seen on the show, and it was amazing how gracious she was tonight when she lost as the final results of American Idol were announced. She never lost her smile, and I think that she had to be at least a little bit taken aback by the announcement that her friend, Lee Dewyze had won the season. She was incredibly mature and classy during the entirety of the show, no matter what the commentary during the judges' responses, and she was in most people's assessment, the front runner from "day one". Raw talent oozes from every pore. She will have a great career because I think she will make great decisions about what to record and where she fits. She knows herself better than most AI contestants do, and she is a songwriter. She will sing a lot of her own songs and they will be great. I can't wait. If you haven't taken any time to hear her, enjoy this clip. And buy her records. She deserves the support. I enjoy Lee Dewyze too, so it was really a no-lose season, but Crystal was my personal favorite. Seacrest out.
Ahh. Like a breath of fresh air, my mood is back to usual today. I don't like feeling down in the dumps. The happy train is back in the station, and boy is that a relief. What can you do to elevate your mood when you are feeling glum? Sometimes stress can actually cause you to feel sick. If you have a lot of stress, I have come up with some very simple ways to feel instantly better. These work for me, they may not for you - but if these don't work, there are probably some that are just as easy to accomplish that would work great. Really, all you have to do is ask one question. If someone looked at you and said, "Hey, tomorrow there will be no jobs that you have to get done, no chores, and no one is depending on you at all. You can do whatever you want to do for one 24 hour period, just because you want to do them." If someone gave you that permission, what would you choose to do? I have a few... I would take a long, relaxing bath. I would go to a florist with ...
Sometimes I think it's a really good thing to stop in your tracks and take stock. Ask yourself how you're doing in life. Just in general. I try to do that at the end of each day. I ask myself if I said anything to anyone in anger or just out of spite. I ask myself if I ignored someone who might have really needed some special attention from me. I ask myself if I am proud of myself for how I acted. If I answer too many times in the negative, then I try to talk about it to myself a little bit in my mind. Self analysis. "Hey, dummy! Why did you do that? Maybe you can do better tomorrow, eh?" I know that may seem a little bit odd, but I have been doing that since I was a kid. It's not that I feel that I must be pleasing everyone else at the expense of meeting my own needs, but if I am meeting my own needs at the expense of others... well, I see that as a problem. Think about it. That good old golden rule should be a guidepost for human behaviour. Who doesn't...
Just for the eyes of our family: the challenge of prostate cancer. Since the beginning of May, last spring, Mark has earned so much respect from me. He has bravely faced his diagnosis of prostate cancer. He had surgery in July, and now in August, he is recovering from that. I am so proud of how he is dealing with the whole thing. He (thankfully) seems to have caught it early, thanks to his regular yearly physical. His PSA was slightly elevated and his biopsy came back showing cancer in four of twelve cores in his prostate. He had the option of radiation or surgery, and he opted for surgery. We are now post-surgery by exactly one month, so I can report good progress at this point. We have a follow-up appointment coming up soon, and are hopeful that the reports are good. Since I have not discussed it since the diagnosis and surgery, I felt that I should start the dialog here. He is being so proactive and is working hard to do everything he can to get past it all. His diet has flip...
