An Apple for Teacher

I have a theory. Even though we have a designated week for appreciating teachers (and it happens to be this particular week) I really feel that you just can't really appreciate your teachers fully until a little later in life.

If even then...

I love the fact that we are getting treated nicely this week, with a whole slate of treats and events from various people in our school. Who doesn't like to feel appreciated, honestly? One of the things I know is that one of the teachers I really appreciated the most after getting older and gaining perspective was one of the ones that was labeled the most demanding ("meanest") in the school as an elementary school student.

She happened to "like" me as a student, but she was very hard on many of my classmates. I was a student who was naturally motivated to make A's and B's in school, so she really never gave me a "hard time", but she saw the potential that some of my friends had who were not doing as well, and she was really "mean" (or demanding) of them. Therefore, she had to be the most dreaded teacher in the 6th grade.

Now she is unfortunately no longer alive, and if she were, I would write her a note on this day. I would write that I finally understood. Yes, I guess it's a little late if it takes until you are in your 50's for you to finally truly appreciate your old gray haired 6th grade teacher, but somehow I hope that Mrs. Loma Pollock, wherever you are, you feel appreciated by me.

For those of you who don't get it yet, I hope that someday you will understand the motivations of your tough, demanding teachers...even if they aren't the easiest (or easiest to get along with) ones in the building, they may care about you a lot more than you think.
