Midway through November...now what?

This has been the "strangest" fall I have experienced in many years. For example, today is November 13th. The high temperature was 86 degrees. My daughter was wearing shorts all day and still complaining that it was kinda hot. Think about that for a minute... four degrees shy of 90? I can't really get into the spirit of planning for Thanksgiving dinner yet, and well, it's just days away now.

But that isn't the only reason that this has been an unusual fall. I think that it is very strange how quickly the school year is passing. I know that the Spring semester always seems to go slower than the Fall semester does, but I think that this school year has gotten so far ahead of me that I am surprised by it. The students that I (seemingly) just started to work with will be gone within weeks. We are already turning in 3 week progress reports for the second 9 weeks! Yikes!

I fear that I will blink an eye and we will be graduating another batch of seniors!

Speaking of seniors, this is an extremely talented group. I always think I am lucky to get a great crop of seniors, and I feel that this year I am watching some people develop who are going to be very good designers, illustrators and photographers. I just put together a slide show of the work that has been done recently, and it is very good. I think that the work that we will see by the end of the year may be some of the best that has been done for quite awhile. If they reach their potential...

So having said that, I am more than ready to start a new week and I hope it doesn't race by. I may be one of the few people I know that isn't counting the days until every weekend!

Ahh. Like a breath of fresh air, my mood is back to usual today. I don't like feeling down in the dumps. The happy train is back in the station, and boy is that a relief. What can you do to elevate your mood when you are feeling glum? Sometimes stress can actually cause you to feel sick. If you have a lot of stress, I have come up with some very simple ways to feel instantly better. These work for me, they may not for you - but if these don't work, there are probably some that are just as easy to accomplish that would work great. Really, all you have to do is ask one question. If someone looked at you and said, "Hey, tomorrow there will be no jobs that you have to get done, no chores, and no one is depending on you at all. Self analysis.

Sometimes I think it's a really good thing to stop in your tracks and take stock. Ask yourself how you're doing in life. Just in general. I try to do that at the end of each day. I ask myself if I said anything to anyone in anger or just out of spite. I ask myself if I ignored someone who might have really needed some special attention from me. I ask myself if I am proud of myself for how I acted. If I answer too many times in the negative, then I try to talk about it to myself a little bit in my mind. Self analysis. "Hey, dummy! Why did you do that? Maybe you can do better tomorrow, eh?" I know that may seem a little bit odd, but I have been doing that since I was a kid. It's not that I feel that I must be pleasing everyone else at the expense of meeting my own needs, but if I am meeting my own needs at the expense of others... well, I see that as a problem. Think about it. That good old golden rule should be a guidepost for human behaviour. Who doesn't...

Since my last post...

Several "firsts" have occurred since the last time I posted. I missed the first day of the school year with the beginning of the school year "crud" and I feel like my immunity system has been exposed to plenty of germies already! Ha! I know we have had a few cases of gastrointestinal distress that proved to be pretty serious. Ugh. More pleasantly, we have had some gorgeous September weather too. That's VERY nice. There have been some very nice surprises in the studio in terms of some talents that are coming to light. I like the students this fall, they are very interesting and diverse. Maybe a little younger than I have taught for awhile, but that is interesting. I think that many of these students may just be around here for multiple years. It's a little bit hard to believe that we are almost halfway through September and we have the first three weeks of school in the can.
